80's Romper?

Have you ever looked at a pattern and thought how cute this would look on you?  Me, too!  That's exactly what I thought when I saw this pattern, McCall's stitch 'n save M6533.  I just finished this up last night and took pictures this morning, OMG!  The 80's are calling and they want their romper back!  I feel like Alexis from Dynasty,  all I need is shoulder pads!! Don't get me wrong, it is comfy to wear, but don't be in a hurry going to the bathroom, it's a  b**** to take off in a hurry!    Although I like the concept of a romper,  aside from the gathered shoulders that gives it that dated look,  I don't like the bodice,   it gaps right in the center and leaves you exposing more than you want to expose.  I do intend to make this again, but I am going to attempt to do something I've never done before, I am going to change the bodice.  I haven't totally decided what I'm going to do with it, I was thinking, maybe a more fitted bodice with a zipper in the back.  I don't know if this would be any easier to take off, but I don't like the idea of buttons, I don't know, maybe once I get started I'll change my mind.  Does anyone have any experience/ideas regarding this dilemma, I'd appreciate hearing from you

  1. It's cute, but I understand the gapping in the front of the bodice and the difficulty in getting it down for personal use. How about a zipper in front? Maybe make the bodice with short dolman sleeves without the gathers, you'll still need to give some dart ease somewhere in the bust if you take out the gathers. I'd like to see the original pattern, I'll look it up online. Whatever you do it should be fun.

    1. I've been looking at RTW rompers at all the department stores and most of them are strapless, cute, but not for someone my age, I did find a couple that zipped down the front and the rest were button up. I agree with you I will need some darts if I take out the gathers. Thanks for the input.

  2. Jamie, I am intrigued by a romper too...but it would be disastrous on me. Yours is cute and I know you will make it even nicer. Zipper in the back? I vote no...how much harder to get the darn thing off in the bathroom...

    1. I know a zipper in the back would be a headache, but it could be sooo cute! You're probably right though, I've been browsing the internet for ideas, and I think I've come up with a few, I just have to get to work and make a pattern. Thanks for the feedback!

  3. You could try a lapped side zip instead. That would be a lot easier. I'm not much help; the only one I've made was strapless. But I plan on making M6331 soon. That one has a back zip, but I might try to switch it to the side. The gaping could be an excuse for a nice brooch. I think it's cute and summery!

  4. This is really cute on you and I love rompers too! I would take about 2 inches off the length from the center front of each pattern piece but draw your line with a ruler so it blends back to the original seamline at the side seams.if you have a dress form pining it to it really helps to illustrate this technique of shortening for a smaller bust adjustment. It fits everywhere but the center front. Once you remove the length there it won't gape anymore. I would add about a 12 inch side zip to the side. Make it a centered zip so you don't have to alter any seam allowances.

    1. Thanks for your advise, I will certainly try that, I like the style, (minus the shoulder pad look) and I really hated to give up on it,it really helps to get input from experienced sewers.
